Abstract

Waning attention is a problem many of us face in various settings-from the workplace to school. Sustaining attention is often crucial in order to maintain good performance. The term “vigilance decrement” refers to the phenomenon where performance on a task declines as time on task increases. The goal of the current study was to replicate the vigilance decrement found elsewhere and to introduce a critical stimulus capable of sustaining attention throughout the task. We found that the introduction of a fairly moderate unexpected salient stimulus in the midst of the task was sufficient to maintain accuracy above that of controls.
